Hi there, sorry if I posted this in the wrong place. I am on the LCA (Legalise Cannabis Alliance) mailing list (just about to join, when I can afford the membership) - The LCA is (as far as I'm aware) the UK's only registered pro-pot political party, for those who never heard of it (hopefully you will soon...)

Anyway, they sent me this & I thought I'd share. I'm going to Chichester on Friday to participate in the demo, and anyone else from the UK, if you can get to Chichester Crown Court for 10:00 am I'm sure you will be more than welcome.

On Friday 9th January 2004, Chris Baldwin, Winston Matthews and Mark Benson
will appear at Chichester Crown Court to be sentenced for their "crimes".
We intend to have a large demo outside the court. If you are able to be
there, please come and show your support for these guys. These so called
crimes are all related to providing a cannabis cafe for the benefit of the
community in Worthing. I think that every town should have a cannabis cafe.
In Worthing the
whole community benefited, from charities to local business. If there
were cannabis cafes all over the UK, just think how the whole country
would benefit. These brave men should be recognised. Come and show your
support please. To those thousands of you out there
who actually visited Quantum Leaf and Buddies, try to find the time to
travel a few miles and let people know what you think. And to those who
never visited but beleive that the way forward is to have
coffee shops, please try and show your support.

Boojum, I would like to be there at the demo tomorrow. I live in the London area and have three children and unfortunately I don't think I would make it after the school run. That makes me sad, I would love to be there with you all. I hope more people make it. Will you let us know how it goes, please? Report back. Good luck, have a good time and be safe.

Echo

Those three guys need all the support they deserve...however since moving from the south coast...travelling to chichester would not be possible for me (working Confused )

As regards cafes...I'm in...and as soon the green light is given, my store will be one of the first to change and become a hub for the local community.....things are already changing for the better...I have secured all the hydro kits and lights necessary to make a nasty dent in the dealers pockets and allow more of the public to enjoy the experience of caring for their babies Very Happy

As a final note....I hope all three get cleared of what is regarded a crime (bull) and that the powers that be finally get their act together and legalise our sacrement Very Happy

Sadly, I was unable to attend this mornings demo (overslept & missed the train cos I was up all night with minor lithium toxicity).

I don't know how the demo went, cos I haven't heard (but then again, I suppose that means nobody got nicked), but I've had an email from the LCA with the sentences for Chris, Winston and Mark. Sadly Chris received a custodial sentence, but from the overall sentencing and his comments, it seems like they got one of the better judges. Here's the details :

Quote:
I have just heard from some of the members of the LCA exec that the Worthing
Coffeeshop Court Case has finished and that this was the result:

Chris Baldwin: 6 month sentence as a result of a previous suspended sentence
of 15 months and 3 x 6 month sentences concurrent to that. The Judge has
said he must not serve more than half of this (3 months) and that he had no
alternative but to put him into custody.

Winston Mathews: 4 x 4 months conditional discharge, including possession of
1/4 kilo of grass and 1/4 kilo of hash and 2 cases of selling £10 deals to
undercover police in the coffee shop.

Mark Benson: 6 months 12 hours curfew, for being involved with the running
of the coffee shop.

None of them got any sentence or punishment for possession or personal
amounts or for the cultivation of plants for medical and recreational use.

The Judge said "They should all be given credit for their guilty pleas" he
accepted there was NO monetary motivation and accepted that they were all
medical users and that they will probably continue to be, he said "Chris
Baldwin was a sincere and honest person".

Obviously we are very sad that Chris will be away from us for up to 3
months, but in the light of the 15 month suspended sentence this isn't too
bad.

It would be nice to think that this is the shape of things to come in the UK, after the 29th Jan, but I wouldn't be surprised if the next big pot cafe trial goes the other way & everyone gets cutodial to show that the courts are not 'soft on drigs' - I suspect Small Minded of East Sussex is already writing a letter to the editor of the telegraph to decry this moral outrage "but how can the streets be safe for nathan and little jocasta to ride their ponys, when they let drug dealers walk free..."

Thanks for the updates Boojun.

There are too few of them. If they were by the hundreds it would be impossible to bring them to court, because it all costs money, and we have limited resources. And now that cannabis is class C (from the 29th of course) it won't be priority, so should there be hundreds at one time.... POP! they would let us be. What about this... I am thinking of it now as I write.... What about selling shares for coffee shops, it shouldn't be too hard, in that way we all become owners of our shops, all equally responsible for their being in this country, all equally punishable. We wouldn't be hundreds, we would be the 10% of the UK population, at least. Envision the vision!

What do you think?

It needs enough folks in the UK as brave as these guys, though, and to do it out in the open, totally up front. There's a couple of cannabis cafes in Brighton, but it's all cloak & dagger stuff, you gotta call to arrange going, then you have to meet someone & get taken there. That's just posh dealing, they aren't in it for anything but the cash, whereas the guys in court today were making a stand. That's the thing, there's quite a few ways we could force a legislation change if we acted together, but even amongst pot smokers, there are still, sadly, far too many people with a 'what's in it for me?' attitude. And the demon apathy, I don't think herb is a demotivator, I think modern society is - to paraphrase a great song, the revolution had better be televised, or else no-one will know it's happened...

It's true that most people are afraid to expose themselves, and they are probably right to be, expecially after the change in the law on the 29th of January, we'll be pushed into hiding even more, because if we keep quiet we won't be harassed, in their words we won't be "priority". Still if someone opens a shop, they will be prosecuted. And this is not what we had in mind. We want cannabis (our sacrament) to be sold in legit outlets throughout the country. We want to go back to a state of normality that has been long abandoned. I think that if we all share responsibility, we are still hiding in a way, but we can achieve the opposite of what the goverment wants. They won't be able to control us, we'll HIDE in NUMBERS Cool

I have submitted my idea of large scale co-ownership of the coffeeshops to Alun, the national coordinator of the LCA, and I got this reply... please, read on...

Alun Buffry wrote:
High,

Just catching up with mail, so will look at site later, but YES absolutely this
would IMO be a very positive move AND could be used to operate private clubs
based in houses or even held weekly at a local hired venue, members only, equal
responsibility. No club would need more than 100 to 150 people, a house could
be rented say 4 or 5 rooms each to be used for a different activity such as
video, music chill -out, tobacco use, chat, even pay a wage to someone to
provide food and drinks, maybe one person living in.

I THINK that keeping it restricted and private, not attracting attention, would
maybe enable police to ignore it. So long as there are no complaints. I think
maybe small is beautiful sometimes and by charging a membership fee and
requiring that a new member be introduced personally by two existing members
would enable enough people to gather for what THEY want and others could do the
same with their desired type of venue

All members equally responsible for managing, signed on paper.

I think this is a topic worth discussing on the lca chat list - to get on it,
just send an email to

chatlist-subscribe@lca-uk.org

then present your ideas and you are welcome to include mine, and I think
something very positive could come out of this

Alun

As you have read Chris Baldwin has been sentenced to 6 months of which he will serve not more than three. Still jails can be awfully solitary places at times, so feel free to send to this address your words of support, he will certainly appreciate it. Thank you.
