Police: Queens priest had porn, gun, Nazi paraphernalia

NEW YORK -- Investigators arrested a priest on suspicion of harassing staff at a Catholic school and found at his home an unlicensed pistol, pornography, Nazi paraphernalia and thousands of dollars that may have been stolen from collection plates, police said.

John Johnston, 64, was awaiting arraignment in Queens on Wednesday on charges of aggravated harassment, weapon possession and possession of stolen property, a spokesman for District Attorney Richard A. Brown said.

The priest was suspected of making a series of harassing calls to Bishop Laughlin High School, in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn, police said.

A police official described the calls to the high school as "threatening and alarming" but did not provide details about their content. Church officials said they did not know of any connection between Johnston and the school.

Johnston was wearing a kimono when he opened the door to detectives at his Queens apartment, law enforcement officials said. The investigators found an unlicensed .38-caliber pistol in the ground-floor apartment, along with items such as Nazi uniform hats and gay pornographic magazines and videos, officials said.

When detectives spotted a pile of money in the living room, the priest told them he had been stealing between $60 and $100 a week from the counting room of the Church of St. Martin of Tours, in Bethpage, N.Y., where he had been working for 25 years, law enforcement officials said.

Johnston allegedly described the money as his 401(k).

On Wednesday afternoon, a police officer guarded the door of Johnston's apartment in a six-story red brick building in the Jackson Heights section. Most neighbors said they didn't know Johnston, but 15-year-old Stephanie Rodriguez described him as "always moody."

"You would say hi, and he never answered back," she said.

Frank DeRosa, a spokesman for the Diocese of Brooklyn, said Johnston was ordained in 1964 and worked in parishes until 1968, when he was given permission to teach high school. He had not had an active role in the Brooklyn diocese in decades but assisted at the parish of the Church of St. Martin of Tours, DeRosa said.

The diocese was not aware of any complaints against him, DeRosa said.

"It's a mystery," DeRosa said. "From our standpoint, these are shocking charges, and they stunned us."

Johnston had taught religion and English at Oratory Preparatory School in Summit, N.J., for 23 years, said James Goodness, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Newark, N.J. The boys' school is affiliated with that archdiocese.

Goodness said Johnston left the school in June of this year, saying he was going to retire.

There was "no indication at all that what we're hearing today existed at all," Goodness said. "This is so shocking, it's unbelievable."

Goodness said Johnston occasionally slept at the priests' residence at the school but there was no indication of any inappropriate behavior. Johnston had occasional disagreements with other faculty, but Goodness said he knew of nothing out of the ordinary.

Goodness said notes were being sent home with students informing parents of the arrest and asking them to come forward if they knew of any inappropriate behavior.

yeah, well thanks mate, that's about all I bring to the table. But...seriously, it
can't be that difficult to become a catholic priest. was probably an excellent cover for all sorts of scandalous/illicit activity back in the day. Now, walking around in a collar is akin to wearing a neon "pedophile" sign. Hard to keep a low profile...except maybe in Roma. If I ever visit the vatican again, I'm going to ask to see the "child pornography chamber". you know, where all the cardinals do their business. Twisted Evil
