Another POW to be counted...

Quote:
On Thursday, August 19, marijuana activist Marc Emery was sentenced to 90 days in jail for passing two jpints in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Emery is the President of the BC Marijuana Party, publisher of Cannabis Culture magazine, and founder of Pot-TV. The charges stem from a March 22, 2004 incident following a political speech Emery gave at the University of Saskatoon in the run up to the federal election.

Emery shared two marijuana jpints with individuals who met with him in a local park after attending his speech. Although charges of trafficking are rarely, if ever, laid just for passing a jpint, the police and prosecutor went out of their way to lay this charge against Emery.

The charge of trafficking carries with it a possible seven year jail sentence, for simply passing a jpint to a friend. Saskatoon is one of Canada's most anti-pot regions, with strict marijuana sentences handed out often. The Crown prosecutor in the case was asking for a sentence of two years less a day.

Following his arrest in March, Emery spent three nights in jail, was forced to pay $3,500 bail and additional legal costs, as well as agree to stipulations severely restricting his rights and freedoms - all for passing two jpints. Now he has been sentenced to 90 days in jail.

The "decriminalization" bill proposed by the federal Liberals would do nothing to stop these kinds of "trafficking" charges being laid just for passing a jpint in the future.

Marc Emery is currently imprisoned in Saskatoon. He is hoping to appeal the sentence but is likely to be in jail for many weeks regardless.

Again my prayers go out to Emery. This is truly disturbing and no doubt
part of Americas pressure on Canada.

Imagine!! 3!! months for passing a simple innocent (even healing) jpint!!

I guess you can translate "American" with "multinational cooperatives" Lilli, the US government is only the tool they use (bought) to do their dirty work. It's all about eliminating competition from the people on our beatifull planet if you ask me.

The sentence would have been much worse had it been in the states.

That's just wrong. As a Canadian, and us being a country so close to decriminalization, I am appaled by the actions taken against Mr. Emery. Although I have heard shady things concerning financial dealings with this man, no-one deserves to do any kind of time for cannabis. I wish Marc the best of luck on his appeals and he will be with me in my thoughts.

*side note* Didn't he just lose his store and political offices to fires???

A sad bit of news indeed. It amazes me how the "champions of justice" who are repressing us, interpet the laws in ways to charge us for things we arent really doing. Trafficking for simply handing a jpint to somebody... This sort of thing would not be tollerated in other areas of the law... The media would be jumping all over it.

Where is the justice, where is the sanity...?

Peace
