Pat Duff, protest organizer, has this report.

Njweedman.com and I lit a giant jpint of some sweet outdoor in protest to the marijuana laws at the liberty bell. Before the sacrament was partaken in, I blared Draconian narco drug war facts about independence mall. For about an hour to where we gathered about 50 people.

Then at 4:20 there was a jpint that was fired up by myself then passing to the weedman while we prayed for the people in jail for marijuana. At that point the park police just kinda stood their ground. I then blared a message over the bullhorn"It doesn't look like the park police are coming over here, so if anyone would like a toke of this fine jpint you are more than welcome, remember, Michael Coard the first ammendment attorney is representing anyone pro-bono who decides to partake". Well, about 30 park police then swarmed in to the crowd to make sure the marjuana wasn't hurting anyone, you know protect and serve. Well I think they thought njweedman and I were being attacked by this dangerous substance.

The rest you'll just have to see on the video, it will be up in less then 3 days. Ohh by the way, we have two attorneys now helping us and we are going straight to the fed court. This may make it legal to smoke on all ground owned by the feds.

The film will be posted on pot-tv. This is being ignored by the mainstream media here. Pat Duff and Ed Forchion were both arrested and will be using the religious use defense citing the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The government will have to prove a compelling justification for burdening their use of the marijuana sacrament.

This is a very important case and the first of it's kind in this District of US Federal Court. The mainstream media has not picked up on it yet but one of the lawyers in the case has his own radio show and will feature the case on their Philadelphia radio program.

MARIJUANA ACTIVIST USES ACT OF DEFIANCE TO LAUNCH CAMPAIGN

Newly off probation, Ed Forchion of Browns Mills announced a bid for
the U.S. House, then lit up.

Call it a jpint announcement.

A South Jersey advocate for the liberalization of marijuana laws
declared his candidacy for the U.S. House at Independence National
Historical Park by - how else? - lighting up a marijuana cigarette.

Not that he got a chance to smoke it.

After just a few tokes Saturday afternoon, a phalanx of 17 park
rangers surrounded Ed Forchion, also known as NJ Weedman.

The rangers confiscated the candidate's jpint, and Forchion, 44, was
issued a $150 ticket for possession of a controlled substance.

Minutes before, while standing between Independence Hall and the
Liberty Bell Pavilion, Forchion said he intended to run as the U.S.
Marijuana Party's candidate for the seat held by Republican Jim Saxton
in New Jersey's Third Congressional District.

The district extends across Burlington and Ocean Counties and includes
a few neighborhoods in Camden County.

Also cited shortly after 4:20 p.m. was Pat Duff, 27, who said he
intended to run as the Marijuana Party's candidate for Philadelphia
City Council in 2007. The self-described "renegade car salesman" said
he would run on a platform encouraging the opening of cannabis cafes
across the city.

About 50 supporters, many with video cameras and shivering against the
wind, had gathered to watch Forchion and Duff ceremoniously light up.

The time and setting had been chosen with Karl Rove-ian precision.
"Four-20" is stoner slang for smoking marijuana. The park had the
benefit of being federal property, outside the jurisdiction of the
Philadelphia Police Department.

"We're peaceful, patriotic potheads," the soft-spoken Forchion said.
"We had meant to do this on Dec. 6, but it snowed and ruined what we'd
thought was going to be a big turnout."

On Dec. 3, Forchion completed 20 months of probation in Camden County
for pleading guilty to possessing five pounds of marijuana with the
intent to distribute.

"I'm happy," he said of putting probation behind him, "I can run for
office again."

Forchion, of Browns Mills, has run for Burlington County freeholder
and for the First District seat in the U.S. House on the Legalize
Marijuana ticket.

A Rastafarian, Forchion has said he smoked marijuana for religious
reasons, to relieve back pain, and to help him deal with chronic
depression. The former cross-country truck driver has been an advocate
of legalizing marijuana since the mid-1990s.

His high jinks have been celebrated in what is left of the
counterculture. Among his stunts: lighting up in the New Jersey
Assembly while wearing a black-and-white-striped prisoner's costume.

Saturday's announcement was intended to make a more sober point, he
said, adding that he intended to challenge the rangers' citations in
court.

"This is all about a First Amendment issue," Forchion said. "Freedom
of religion allows for the religious use of marijuana on federal
property. I'm just exercising that right."

maybe it's about time a judge confirms the existing laws.

I cannot take credit for this demonstration. This was the work of Ed Forchion and Pat Duff. The original protest was supposed to be Dec. 6 which I went to, but unfortunately it was postponed and I couldn't go this time. Pat Duff also has a radio show and there are archives of his Open Minds Show at: http://herbillest.com/news.html

There is a messageboard at that site that Ed and Pat frequent if anyone would like to leave them a message of support.

Pat Duff will be proposing a coffee shop system for the Philadelphia area. While most organizations are loading marijuana patients into cannons to battle the state they are defending our first amendment right to persue happiness and the right of free conscience. There are two lawyers who have come forward who are willing to use a religious defence so we have much to be thankful for.

Hi I am Patrick Duff, herb smoker till the end. I want to tell everyone that my methods and actions may seem harsh compared to many in this community. Though the harshness of putting someone in jail is way worse. To see that anyone would take the time to pray made me cry, not kidding. I have taken a whole bunch of crap for doing this from my friends and family. I am not going to let them sway me though. Please keep praying, we are fighting against people who want us dead.

Welcome Pat! Good to see you come onboard. I personally don't think you way of activism is harsh at all and you are right, many peole are jailed and some people have been killed all becouse of them using it, or advocating the liberty of hemp.

Founding the Amsterdam THC Ministry and thus helping to give the religious/spiritual use of the Herb international legal body is my contribution to the cause and I will not stop here.

The U.S. has declared a war on drugs, well, as I see it, they declared a war on every person on this planet who use cannabis and as cannabis is a sacrament in some religions they have declared war on those religions too. I don't think this is constitutional and I know for sure the Universal Declaration of Human Rights doesn't approve of this.

One thing I want for the future is to see us grow big enough so we can sue the hell out of them in international court.

Keep on doing what you're doing bro, people like you are needed.

Hi(gh) Patrick. Man, you have my total respect & admiration. Next year I plan on getting involved in cannabis activism in the UK, though I'm too much of a coward to make a stand like you. Nice one mate yourock

Latest media update :

Monica Yant Kinney, Philadelphia Inquirer Columnist wrote:
Weedman mission hits a serious snag
By Monica Yant Kinney

The Weedman strikes again.

This time, his antigovernment attitude - not his drug habit - may send him
back to jail.

The Weedman is Ed Forchion, a dreadlocked Rastafarian asthmatic former
truck driver from Burlington County who believes he has the religious and
medical rights to puff pot.

He also happens to think the nation's drug laws stink, destroy families,
and unjustly clog up the court system.

Forchion has become something of a celebrity activist in these parts,
lighting up jpints outside Independence Hall and inside the New Jersey
Statehouse to lure reporters and force police to arrest him.

He has petitioned the courts to legally change his name to NJWeedman.com in
an effort to draw more eyeballs to his pro-pot Web site.

Forchion probably should have faded into obscurity last year after
finishing a short prison sentence for possessing 40 pounds of pot.

He couldn't. He wouldn't, even with a wife and kids to support.

Instead, the Weedman continued his crusade, railing against a new state law
that requires a wider class of convicts and parolees to submit DNA to a
criminal database.

Forchion says the law amounts to after-the-fact punishment and an invasion
of privacy.

So he filed a federal lawsuit challenging its constitutionality.

And when he was assigned a date to fork over his own DNA, he ignored it.

By his own count, the Weedman has nine active legal cases.

All have something to do with pot and the pothead's contention that weed -
and the Weedman - have been unfairly vilified.

He claims he tracks them all in his head and on his computer, but with so
many fires to fight, the details can escape him.

Take the Battle of Cherry Hill.

The Weedman contends he was sitting in his car outside a Dunkin' Donuts
when cops, acting on a report of a suspicious person, searched the vehicle
and found a stash in the ashtray.

He told me the case would be heard today. But it turned out he had a court
date last week - and missed it.

Yesterday, the Weedman had no such trouble, arriving at the Camden County
Hall of Justice more than an hour before his DNA case hearing.

During the weekend, he learned a grand jury had indicted him for refusing
to submit his DNA.

Overnight, his act of civil disobedience became criminal contempt.

Overnight, a family man cherishing his freedom found himself facing 18
months behind bars.

If convicted, he could do time in state prison and wind up with a
protracted parole that would force him to give up the ganja for years.

"I guess this is another one of those times my family's thinking: 'You did
it to yourself,' " he said. "But I really didn't expect this."

Outside the courthouse, the Weedman handed out news releases while a buddy
marched around carrying a sign reading, "Say no to DNA."

Given the Weedman's regular appearances inside, many of the lawyers leaving
for lunch instantly recognized him.

"I've been coming here for seven years," the Weedman explained.

In the hall outside his courtroom, the Weedman shared his strategy.

He can't be guilty of criminal contempt for refusing to give his DNA, he
said, because he had already filed his federal suit challenging the law.

Wrongo, said Assistant Prosecutor John Wynne, after police took the Weedman
away to fingerprint him and file arrest papers.

"You get a court order, you have to obey it," Wynne said. "He should know
this."

Naturally, the Weedman pleaded not guilty.

Luckily, he was released on his own recognizance so he could go home to his
family and his job.

Thankfully, he'll have a real lawyer when the case resumes next month.

"I guess," he admitted, "this is above my jailhouse lawyering skills."

A self-aware stoner with the presence of mind to know he's out of his league?

What would the drug czars say?
