Anti-Drug Campaigns Dumb Down Vital Message

DWR: Saturday, August 16, 2008
Oops, Last year, David Krahl worked for Calvina Fay as deputy director of the Drug Free America Foundation, lobbying against medical marijuana. Seems he's learned a few things since then.

Mel Sembler and his wife Betty founded Straight, Inc., a drug treatment program for youth that used sleep deprivation, starvation, beatings, denial of basic health needs, sexual assault, deprivation of liberty and speech and psychological torture (Straight, Inc. later became Drug Free America Foundation. He was appointed ambassador to Australia by George H.W. Bush and Ambassador to Italy by George W. Bush, and is working for Mitt Romney's campaign as well as chairing the Scooter Libby Defense fund.

The Agitator reports that Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has hired Mel Sembler to raise money for him. This is something we mentioned in passing earlier this year, but Maia Szalavitz has a strong article in Reason about Mitt Romney and his connection to child torturer Mel Sembler (founder of Straight, Inc.): Romney, Torture, and Teens

Ambassador de Sade, By John Gorenfeld in AlterNet
Bush's ambassador to Italy doesn't speak Italian, and his qualifications seem to be a history of running a program that tortured kids. That's right. Ambassador Mel Sembler and his wife ran STRAIGHT, Inc.... before seeing it dismantled by a breathtaking array of institutional abuse claims by mid-1993. Just one of many survivors is Samantha Monroe, now a travel agent in Pennsylvania, who told The Montel Williams show this year about overcoming beatings, rape by a counselor, forced hunger, and the confinement to a janitor's closet in "humble pants" -- which contained weeks of her own urine, feces and menstrual blood. During this "timeout," she gnawed her cheek and spat blood at her overseers. "I refused to let them take my mind," she says of the program. The abuse took years to overcome.

Speaking of the children
I had missed this when it came out, but it seems Joe Lieberman has taken up with child abuser Mel Sembler, the founder of Straight, Inc.

From 1976-1985 it was known as Straight, Inc. and had a reputation for abusing kids as a drug rehabilitation program. Was a young Charlie Crist ever in a drug rehab?
Friday, September 29, 2006

The Seed was a teen drug rehabilitation chain in Florida in the 1970s. The US Senate accused the program of using North Korean brainwashing methods on American kids. Ambassador Melvin Sembler patterned Straight, Inc. after The Seed. Mel Sembler's son Brent and Charlie Crist are childhood friends. Today Brent Sembler is Charlie Crist's finance chairman. Mel Sembler has disclosed, by deduction, that Brent Sembler was in The Seed. One recruitment method used by The Seed was to get kids already in the program to rat on their friends and siblings to get them in the cult too.

Charlie Crist's dad was on The Seed's Advisory Board. Since The Seed and Straight had reputations for abuse and cult-like behavior, most adults associated with these cults (other than program employees) were parents who had a child in the program--parents like Mel Sembler who founded his own Seed-like treatment cult. So we ask the question. If you have any information on whether Florida's gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist was in The Seed, please send your confidential correspondence to wesfager@thestraights.com.

Lock 'em all up, for Crist's sake!

Straight, Inc. closed in 1993 on the heels of state investigations and law suits [the FBI investigated Straight in 1993 for alleged financial fraud but no indictments were handed down], but Straight Foundation, Inc., the education arm of Straight, continues to operate as a national and international drug policy think tank under the name Drug Free America Foundation. The president's brother, Governor Jeb Bush, and other high-level Republicans serve on DFAF's Advisory Board. Today Betty Sembler and other former Straight officials are directors for Operation PAR, another Pinellas County, Florida-based drug rehab program. PAR has never been accused of abuse. There are many second-generation Straights still in operation (see flow chart [1]) and some of these have been accused of abuse

An angel hovers nearby, offering her protection from this plague of prescriptions.

And at a Christian young adult home in Corpus Christi, police recently took the unusual step of arresting a supervisor after teenagers complained that they were beaten and roped to a bed, all in the name of Christian discipline. More arrests are anticipated, authorities say.

The Nazi program for the extermination of European Jewry is the most vile, disgusting, horrific treatment of a people by another people in the 20th Century and probably in all of human history. The story of what the Nazis did must be told and retold forever in books, films, plays and Holocaust museums. Like the Nazis, Straight, Inc. was another great 20th Century violator of civil liberties and human rights. Over 40 former Straight clients have committed suicide.

There is so much misinformation about marijuana out there, due to efforts by some to desensitize society to the harms and risks of this illegal substance. Marijuana is not only harmful, but addictive and potentially deadly. It is not a medicine in its smoked form – and hey, if you don't believe us, ask the FDA.
-- Calvina Fay

Ok Lets...
Seems the FDA has never conducted a test using cannabis.
Seems it was an FDA employees opinion quoted for this lie.
Seems Calvina has adopted Straights same old deceptions...

The FDA's Marijuana Problem

The FDA's announcement smacks of politics. How so? The FDA lets word out that it thinks using medical marijuana is scientifically untenable, then a gaggle of legislators cry foul, appealing for a crackdown; they'll earn their sound byte.

The FDA should focus on which foods and drugs are safe for Americans. It should not deliberately spark political debates over what is beneficial to Americans. Candid observers will note that this is what the agency is effectively doing.

Candid observers will also think twice about swallowing the agency's conclusions.

The FDA's Reefer Madness

Bruce Mirken, director of communications for the Marijuana Policy Project, retaliated with a statement: "If anybody needed proof that the FDA has become totally politicized, this is it. This isn't a scientific statement; it's a political statement."

Mirken charges that Rep. Mark Souder, R-Ind., asked the FDA to make this latest statement saying that Souder is a "rabid congressional opponent of medical marijuana."

MMJ Advocates Slam ‘Politicized’ FDA Report

Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, said in a statement on Friday, "It is shameful to see the FDA talking out of both sides of its mouth on this issue by declaring there is no sound research on the medical benefits of medical marijuana, but at the same time, denying researchers the opportunity to study the efficacy of cannabis."

Mirken of the Marijuana Policy Project commented that in the broader debate over drug-policy reform, the FDA’s statement strikes at a particularly vulnerable population swept up in the drug war. "From our point of view," he said, "as long as we have a ‘war on drugs,’ can we please at least remove the sick and wounded from the battlefield?"

Cannabis (and Drug) Consumption
Earth Day Tragedy-Of-Sorts
Wal-Mart, Hemp and Right-Wing Anti-Cannabis Crusades
April 22nd, 2008 By: Allen St. Pierre, NORML Executive Director

Born the same year in 1970, Earth Day and NORML have grown up side-by-side. Today, millions of Americans will celebrate and be mindful of the basic message of Earth Day: Living in harmony with nature.

Frustratingly, NORML recently discovered through a tip from a supporter and a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) that an anti-drug group based in Florida called Drug Free America Foundation (DFAF) in their zeal against anything having to do with cannabis harass major corporations and retailers to stop marketing all products that are made of hemp, books that educate about the plant and even CDs from musical artists that dare mention the word ‘hemp’.

One of DFAF’s targets was retail giant Wal-Mart. In 2005, DFAF director Calvina Fay (a former law enforcement employee) wrote to the CEO of Wal-Mart, S. Robeson Walton, bringing to his attention that of the tens of thousands of products Wal-Mart sells, DFAF took great umbrage with the company for selling two hemp-related books and a CD by Canadian rock band ‘Chixdiggit’.

“Save Money. Live Better.” (Wal-Mart motto)
A search of Wal-Mart’s webpage today, and a trip to a Wal-Mart in Maryland confirms, that apparently DFAF’s harassment of Wal-Mart worked as the company no longer sells any book titles concerning hemp, no hemp-related clothing, jewelry or backpacks. However, despite DFAF’s protest, Wal-Mart still retails CDs by Chixdiggit, featuring the song ‘Hemp, hemp hooray!’

What can cannabis consumers and concerned citizens do to counter the anti-cannabis advocacy of groups like DFAF? Do the same thing! Write to the CEOs and/or owners of retail stores and tell them that you logically want hemp-based products to purchase for all obvious reasons—hemp is an environmentally safe, responsible and valuable agricultural product that takes little fertilizer and almost no pesticide to produce a cash crop that is as utilitarian, if not more so, than the soybean.

Let prospective business owners who may have a commercial interest in selling hemp products know that virtually every country in the world (even though ‘marijuana’ is not legal in these countries to ingest) allows non-psychoactive hemp to be cultivated and used for industrial purposes/apparel, and that the two primary reasons that hemp is not a staple agricultural commodity in America is 1) because of the country’s misguided and blanket cannabis prohibition (a.k.a. Reefer Madness) created by the federal government in 1937, and 2) so-called anti-drug groups disingenuously confusing industrial hemp with marijuana for the purposes of continuing the mindless practice of opposing any human interaction at all with the cannabis plant, be it for adult recreant use, a safe/non-toxic therapeutic or as a valuable industrial plant that humans have been cultivating and employing for the betterment of society for thousands of years.

On this 38th Earth Day, do something bold for the planet and personal freedom: Support and commend your local retailers and stores that carry hemp products while at the same time opposing anti-drug groups like DFAF from making the war on some drugs any worse for society or the environment than it already has become.

Earth Day Bonus in Washington, DC - After nearly 12 years without a true hemp store, eco-minded consumers in the nation’s capital can finally purchase hemp apparel and products with the grand opening this week of Capitol Hemp in the Adams Morgan neighborhood.

Wall street's Spontaneous Abortionists

The drug worrier gossip has real life consequences. Keeping a safer alternative from legitimacy by this constant barrage of unsubstantiated lies. It is almost impossible to believe these greedy ego trippers are even naive and just well meaning with good intentions. No one can bury their heads that deep, That means they not only know and prosper on persecuting Americans choosing cannabis over the status quo. They enjoy it, like some Americans were their enemy in this later day civil war. Is it that hard to see? Doesn't anyone know anyone who doesn't get hurt smoking pot? Millions do ever single day and none of this rubbish ever happens. We wouldn't tolerate anyone selling garbage schwagg or adulterated ditchweed. If they ever do it is solely do to prohibition the same as the St. Valentines Day Massacre. Enough is enough. Get over it and move on... DdC

However, it's still nice to see any public acknowledgment of the dirty little secret of the drug war -- it has damaging consequences.
Wall Street Journal OpEd DWR:8.18.8

Anti-Drug Campaigns Dumb Down Vital Message
DWR Forum 8.18.8

Acknowledgment seems to be the key word. Without the internet citizens got news from books the general public never saw. Most of the newspapers with occasional truths, were local and no one outside of the area saw it. TV blackouts outside of anything stoner stupid or demonizing. Radio censors, even Rock and Roll failed to inform about the the drug war outside of a few renegades. So generally the scam was not seriously opposed. NORML to High Times with SNL poking fun every once in a while. Cheech and Chong or Carlin or the Airplane movies seemed funnier stoned, but they weren't documentaries on smoking Ganja. As it seems drug thugs do today.

The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance.
- Socrates.

The knowledge of cannabinoids and properties of hemp were not studied, except much of the knowledge was documented for anyone seriously looking. Hemp and RxGanja was never meant to be included in the 1937 tax ax. Then medical research was banned in 74. Banning tumor shrinking abilities is 9-11 on everybody. What could a terrorist possibly do worse than hide a potential cancer treatment resource? Plus hundreds of other "illnesses" and symptoms and the number 1 killer, stress. Crooked politics is the only answer.

It is very hard to believe this knowledge has been hidden in a hermetically sealed mayonnaise jar from Congress, Presidents, the Press and even the Highest Court in the Land rendering decisions on the vegetable matter.

In a republic like ours, people often think that the proper response to an unjust law is to try to use the political process to change the law, but to obey and respect the law until it is changed. But if the law is itself clearly unjust, and the lawmaking process is not designed to quickly obliterate such unjust laws, then the law deserves no respect — break the law.
- Henry David Thoreau

And if the top is so uninformed, there is little question what falls onto the lower levels via "programmed" news. This can not logically be just naive people, they can't be that dumb and have the position they have. OK, W's the exception because of family ties. It is way beyond conspiracy theories or coincidence so many poison free, crude oil less products are outlawed out of the trade markets and family farmers fields. There seems to be little doubt this prohibition has other motives than keeping kids from chemical dependency

A day without fun is a day that eats shit.
- Hunter S. Thompson

In that case, this is not being dealt with in a Democratic manner and that should be grounds for something. War Crimes if I had my preferences. Lying to fabricate false standards is what ended Enron and bilked employees out of pensions, like the Keating 5. When the government does it to its citizens, it is not a government of the people and for the people.

Now with such obvious treachery exposed, one might think it was over. They surely can't go on with the same old lies, with hundreds of cannabis news sites and blogs and genuine research from those not willing to accept the "agenda". Other countries with no strings attached to the ONDCP are finding things. Growing hemp and medicinal Ganja. Hundreds of modern day Apothecaries springing up. Clothing, pretzels, soap and candy bars being sold.

"We have spent over a trillion dollars trying to eradicate the world's most beneficial plant off the face of the earth. Imagine what a better world this would be if that money had been spent on treatment, education and studying the medical benefits of marijuana."
-- Steve Hager - High Times Editor (1988 - 2003)

Yet our media and drug czar and his groupies continue as if no one knows. Don't pay attention to the man behind the curtain... Like it's still a big secret and as long as they stay in denial, they can maintain the same old sorry conversation. As long as their heads are buried in the sand they won't see the crimes of Injustice.

"We.. say that on the medical evidence available, moderate indulgence in cannabis has little ill-effect on health, and that decisions to ban or legalise cannabis should be based on other considerations."
-- The Lancet, vol 352, number 9140, November 14 1998

Folk's just have to go to any message board and see what happens when reality hits the drug thugs. They spew nothing but hate and silly old calvinish reefer madness against instant rebuttal from many Universities and libraries. Even with most not engaging by the views its clear the info is being seen. And some of the prohibition puzzle starts to take shape. I've seen in person the local cops attitudes change from caging sick people to accepting buyers clubs sanctioned by city councils. Just from Americans not wanting to be BS'd.

We work just as hard and honorably toking after work as anyone drinking or popping legal pills. Stealing ones urine is degrading and unethical and self incriminating. Un-American. Sneaky, like infrared peeping toms or spying on families through windows like any common pervert. Lies. Lies for the good of the public? Lies and good? Now that seems oxymoronic. Secret searches, no warrant eaves dropping. Patriot Ax, RAVE Ax Higher Ed Ax chopping away at the Bill of Rights. What other "crime" can you get jail time before you even do anything, possession? Inhaling or not.

"Cannabis smoking] does not lead directly to mental or physical deterioration... Those who have consumed marijuana for a period of years showed no mental or physical deterioration
which may be attributed to the drug."

-- LaGuardia Commission Report, 1944

Possession of a car means your going to speed and crash?
Possession of a gun means you rob banks and shoot people?
Possession of aspirin means your going to overdose?
Yet being an arbitrary distance from a controlled substance gets you busted, and your money taken, along with smashing up your living room to prove they're bad boys bad boys. Not being allowed to defend yourself is a no brainer its fascism. I grew it for the citizens and sanctioned by the city of Morro Bay or Oakland or now in BC thanks to Harper joining the US fascists. Rule 404 the jury is instructed to rewind and erase the defendants defense. 95% plea bargain into forced religious rehabs with pisstasters getting a cut or risk mandatory sentencing if found guilty by a jury of your all white GOP x cop peers.

How you can win the population for war: At first, the statesman will invent cheap lying, that impute the guilt of the attacked nation, and each person will be happy over this deceit, that calm the conscience. It will study it detailed and refuse to test arguments of the other opinion. So he will convince step for step even therefrom that the war is just and thank God, that he, after this process of grotesque even deceit, can sleep better.
- Mark Twain

The "debates" rarely have a winner or loser but regardless of the debate itself, the general public is starting to see a trend in how the debate is conducted, and even a little of how the drug war is being conducted. Behind closed doors. Take their word for it, not the reformers selling drugs, or other demonizing tactics. Why is the Constitution important, its just druggies.

No its just citizens and what they prohibit today, is very interchangeable. The first drug laws were sprung out of the tommy-gun laws. Not hard to go back as they did in SF with hand guns. Why special rules for Ganja and not rape and murder? Special drug rules to deny poor people college tuition assistance. Or public housing or even the basics, foodstamps. Not denied to murderers or even welfare cheats. The largest cheats being the G-8 World Banksters mainly prohibitionists tax cheats sheltering through drug worrier groups or move HQ to the Cayman Islands. Same ones shutting down US textile mills moving to sweatshops overseas while hemp could be filling the gap and lost jobs.

"There are no long lasting ill-effects from the acute use of marijuana and no fatalities have ever been recorded ... there seems to be growing agreement within the medical community, at least, that marijuana does not directly cause criminal behaviour, juvenile delinquency, sexual excitement, or addiction."
Dr J. H. Jaffe,
The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics.
L.Goodman and A Gillman, 3rd edn. 1965.

So how can the Wallstreet Journal or any so called journal or so called journalist even get paid when they're either totally ignorant or totally corrupt? Man if old stoners "get it" 40 years ago I see no reason for this pretense of the moron majority. They know and they either stand with the founding fathers or they go with the neolibcons. Bush is no conservative rising the debt more than any liberal and the size of the government. Klintoon wasn't liberal doubling the homeless population, starting preemptive wars and incarcerating more Ganja users than Nixon, Reagan and Bush One combined. He busted 17 truckloads of hemp bird seed and tried caging doctors for even mentioning pot. Totally left the boundaries of separation asking the Supreme Court to decide against buyers clubs.

This is as open as Jim Crow and segregated hotels and businesses. And the powers of the so called free press stand silent as they embed themselves in this civil war, as they did in the Iraq Oil War. If people still believe this cowardly oppressive treatment of their neighbors and co workers is worth it, I have no use for them or sympathy when the world calls us on our bullshit. How can anyone defend such obvious fascism? See any public acknowledgment? DdC 8.18.8

it is condemned to literary sterility. And when it is past,
it will have no history, except the bloody history of murder."
